JAKE in March

March 2006

JAKE IS HOME FROM THE HOSPITAL

Jake returned home on March 4. He isn't fully recovered but sure is much better. He lost a little weight but not a whole lot. And I think he is happy to be back!

Jake came home today. He has work to do. He has to eat a tablespoon or two of special high calorie food every 2 hours or so. And we have to go into our bathroom and steam it up 3 times a day and then we clap him on the sides to get him to cough. He has meds, of course. And in a week or so he will get fresh x-rays. In the meantime, he isn't supposed to play hard and just rest and recover.

This last photo was too funny to leave out. Jake is "inspected" upon return and he looks like he is just putting up with it! Glennie is satisfied that it is still Jake!

Jake ate about 4 teaspoons of his food and drank water. He didn't pooh at all but did pee. He isn't as active as he was before he was sick but isn't nearly as quiet as just before he went into the hospital. We are trying to steam but aren't getting much of anything in the way of production. His weight in the morning was about 4.8#

MARCH 5 IN THE MORNING

Jake got up at midnight to pee but otherwise slept through the night. He was hungry this morning and ate about a tablespoon of his food and later a bit of yogurt with his Pepcid. He has been steamed once and clapped (no production) and just had his meds. He is drinking water. Jake isn't coughing very much. I could hear the congestion when he first got up but that sound has gone away. His weight looked like 4.9#. He got on the floor and tried to join in the play this morning. Glennie is still not very interested but Molly is starting to gently play a little with him. I do believe they don't want to hurt this tiny thing and are being very cautious.

Jake had a busy day between eating and steaming and coughing. We are finally getting some coughing after the steaming but our efforts aren't as good as they could be. Deb Owen is sending Twink's nebulizer and then maybe we will be able to do better. Jake is eating quite well (although I think Molly ate one serving of his food when I turned my back!) I've seen him eat kibbles that he found from before he went to the hospital and he sure wants to eat whatever I have so I think his appetite is back. It got stronger as the day went on and he finished his first can of food tonight.

MARCH 6

Jake did well overnight. The only time I heard those congestion sounds was when I carried him to the potty during the night. While he was in his crate he was quiet. He is playing quietly when I dangle things in front of him. And I think he would be running through his tunnels if I put them back up but it is too soon to use his calories that way. His weight is down a bit (4.5#) but he ate a good breakfast and I will give him more each time now that he seems to be eating all I give him. (I think my scale gets a little off when used too. I had to adjust it today so that may account for at least some of the loss.) The doctor didn't want him to get too much at a time because she was concerned that he would start throwing up. He really prefers it when I give him the Activa yogurt!

Jake played for a bit with his Crash Test Toy made out of Racoon. Then he fell asleep holding it. Later he posed for a sophisticated photo! (The shaving on his leg is where he had a tube inserted while in the hospital.)

MARCH 7 HAPPY BIRTHDAY - SIXTEEN WEEKS OLD

Jake finished up the day yesterday with a big meal and then ate a dental kibble too. I don't know if he is supposed to have anything like a kibble. I gave it to him to play with thinking it was way to big for him to eat but the next thing I knew he was eating it! I am going to have to get him more food today because he went through more than a can yesterday plus some yogurt and then that dental kibble. His weight this morning was up a bit but not yet at 5#. Maybe close to 4.8#. I thought it would be more from all he ate!

Jake played in the earthdog liner yesterday and played tug. He gets so excited. I got out the footballs that Glennie likes so much. Glennie immediately took it outside but I had a spare which Jake liked but he doesn't really chase and retrieve. He more follows its movement a bit. I don't think he is going to be the "fetcher" that Glennie is. He seems more like Molly in that he likes the scurrying movement on the floor with the toys but he holds on tighter and tugs harder than she does.

We continue to steam but we don't get a lot of production. I haven't actually heard much of any coughing from him. But I don't hear much breathing problems except when he first wakes up at night. He only got up once in the night but it was too late...he had already wet his bed. But after that, he slept from 11:30 to about 7am with a dry bed.

This wasn't an "assisted" photo...Jake saw Molly there and snuggled in all on his own.

Jake in the afternoon.

MARCH 8, 2006

The kids are all clearly getting more comfortable with each other. Even Glennie is starting to like the puppy. Jake tried hard this morning to get them to play and Molly started to respond but she just seems to realize how tiny he is and backs off.

This must have been from yesterday; found it on the camera and liked it.

MARCH 9, 2006

Jake went to the vet today and got a good report. The vet says we can treat him like a healthy dog now and let him be active, go outside etc. I took him for his first walk today....or modified walk. It was too wet for a "mom" to let him walk on the ground and he isn't leash trained yet. But we went around the block and I think he enjoyed himself. The joggling helped bring up his cough a bit too. I do believe I see those ears coming back up again!! He is playing with the others. He likes Molly and I thinks sees her as a momma substitute but he really likes Glennie too. Glennie is still a bit standoffish at times but at times will play with him. Jake is really thrilled when they include him in their play.

The vet did mention again that he appears to be a "dwarf" in that the upper parts of his legs are shorter than normal and a bit "twisted" but he doesn't see this as having a negative impact on him...just that he will probably be shorter than normal. He moves just fine.

Jake is going from the prescription food to puppy canned food and some kibble now but he gets to eat all he wants. He weighed 4.8# officially. Next week he will have x-rays of his lungs and blood work to be sure all continues to progress as it should.

MARCH 10, 2006

Jake is especially peppy this morning. Very pesky too. My shoelaces are going to be in shreds soon. He WANTS TO PLAY! At times, his ears are almost full up now. And he and Glennie are getting along. (I have to admit to staging these photos but it is pretty amazing that Glennie allowed it!)

An Aspiring Earthdog!

MARCH 11, 2006

Here are his morning photos to document the status of his ears! And he weighted 5.25 pounds on the baby scale this morning. He is coughing a lot but it sounds very loose so I'm hoping that means that it is finally going to go away.

And then they had their morning play session...best one yet!

Glennie and Jake are bonding. At times Glennie is still a bit standoffish but more and more, he is Jake's friend. Molly likes Jake but is a dignified lady who chooses her moments.

I've heard of "bending over backwards" but Jake's ears are carrying it a little too far! Jake is a quick learner. He is doing a very nice "sit"; is getting better on his "down" and has started learning to roll over and to shake hands. He is learning to speak on command also. He is entering the earthdog liner to "Go get 'em" and he runs through 10" feet with one turn. He comes out at top speed to catch his toy critter. What a guy!

MARCH 13, 2006

I've had so much conflicting advice about what to do or not do about Jake's ears which are now folded as far backwards as they used to be folding forward, that I've taken a middle road for now. I put a piece of adhesive tape down the back of each one to act as a support. I've just kind of put a "facing" on them so they are a bit stronger until he is able to handle them on his own. The tape is like an extra spine.

MARCH 15, 2006

Jake continues to do well. His weight is just under 6# and his cough is getting less and less. He had his first show-type outing last night when we went to an obedience match. He was fascinated by the other dogs. He rides in the back seat in his seatbelt harness between Molly and Glennie. Jake is learning so fast. His ears continue to bend backwards unless they are tape. Tomorrow is his next vet appointment and he will also visit the groomer.

MARCH 16, 2006

Today was Jake's vet appointment. He is improving but still has congestion in his lungs. He will continue on a higher level of antibiotics (higher because he is getting bigger) for the next 3 weeks and then we will x-ray again. He seems to be doing really well though. He sure can kick up a fuss when he gets a shot! Everyone came to see him and got a kick out of his ears that have curled backwards! He is now 5.8# officially. He is losing his teeth now and, in fact, the vet pulled one out because the adult one was in and it hadn't come out yet but was very loose. Jake got a toy mouse for being a good boy at the vet and the groomer. The groomer said he was wonderful. The one photo is of him and his foster sister and brother, Molly and Glennie.

MARCH 18, 2006

Jake woke up today with EARS!!!

See Jake's new DUDS!

The vet called with the results of Jake's blood test. His white and red counts are back in the normal range now! He did have mild anemia and an elevation in monocytes; both are expected. Mild anemia can be just because he is a puppy but both are also expected with chronic illness which Jake certainly has had. Neither is anything to get upset about.

MARCH 20, 2006

This weekend I took Molly and Glennie to Cobo to do the Lure Racing demo. Jake stayed home alone on Saturday (We made our day a short one.) and on Sunday he went to volunteer Katie's home for the day. He had fun playing with another westie and nibbling on a Beagle's ears!

On Monday, we got busy making him a kilt for our Spring Specialty. It was kind of guess work because I have no way to know just how much he will grow between now and then so this may be just a "prototype" and have to be redone before we get to the end of April. But at least I will have the materials and know how to make it. (Notice his one ear is tilting back again. But it isn't all the way down like it was so I'll wait and see what happens. They tend to droop more as the day goes on so by tonight it might be even further down.

Jake, Glennie and Molly play in and around the earthdog liners. Jake occasionally came to me for rescue but soon left to rejoin the play.

MARCH 21, 2006

This morning we went to the vet. The first shot is of them all packed in the car in their seatbelt harnesses. They ride very nicely together. When they fall asleep in the back seat, they tend to all be snuggled together against Jake. The next two shots are to show his ears. They are now flopping all over the place. Sometimes they are one forward and one back!! LOL Every day he has a new style!

MARCH 22, 2006

Jake got up in the night to potty and he just seemed to have grown. This morning I weighed him and he came in at 7# which is double his weight when we got him on 2/17. He is 8.5" tall. Here is his photo today next to the other two...he doesn't look so tiny any longer.

MARCH 24, 2006

Yesterday we went to agility school for the first time in a while and Jake did a nice job of waiting quietly in his crate. Between classes, we ran on the floor and played a bit just to give him some chance to move around a bit. He was a very good boy all day long. Jake has turned out to have an "aaahroo!" My other two don't do this and I always like it so was glad to hear it out of him, three times in the last two days. Today he has run the tunnels and worked the rat cage a bit with his mouth and paws. His weight is creeping up a bit over 7#. He is playing with Glennie and Molly whenever they decide to play with him. It is snowing out so we have stayed indoors. Here is a photo of him with his little pink piggy puppet

MARCH 25, 2006

Jake had his first taste of snow today. It was just a little taste. He missed bigger snows when he was too sick to go outside but today I let him go out for a few minutes. He wasn't really very thrilled by this cold stuff and we didn't stay out long. I've tried different things on his ears short of taping them around a form. They are still tending to tip backwards pretty solidly. Even though I've shaved the fuzz off, bandaids don't stick very well. Today I found some bandaids that are made out of duct tape and I tried them thinking they would stick better. They do but they also seem to end up sending the ear forward instead of up. Hoepfully they will come around by themselves eventually.

MARCH 25, 2006

Jake is about 4.5 months old now (19 weeks). His weight is 7.5# which is 1# less than Molly was at this age. (She topped out at 10.5" and should be about 15# so he may end up a bit smaller.) But I think his weight is normal for him now...no signs of the early starvation. Jake's ears still flop around, mostly backwards. Taping them doesn't work really well because he takes the tape off; and while it is on, it pushes the ears forward instead of up. At some point, we may have to tape around forms. As I look at him right now one is going backwards and the other forward but it is just the tips so I still have hope they will finish on their own. When he gets tired, they droop more.

He is very active in the mornings...more so than any of us care for! LOL But he settles as the day goes on. Unlike my other two who always prefer little cat-size toys, Jake has found a favorite in a big yellow duck!

Today, he went into his pen on his own and pottied on the pee pads! Just for good measure, he found another pee pad and pottied there too. This boy is a pooh machine! Soon it will warm up and we can go outdoors most of the time.

He lays on the bed with us in the early evening while I watch TV. But as he falls asleep, I put him in his crate. In the early morning, after he potties, I often put him in bed with us to finish up sleeping. I think he treasures that time the very most. He snuggles and lays quietly except for licking me. Sometimes Molly climbs under the covers and snuggles with me on one side and Jake on the other. If I pull Glennie up, the three will pile up for petting.

Jake likes Molly best I think but he plays the most with Glennie. They tease each other and taunt each other into a chase. Jake likes to hide in the earthdog liner and pop out at them. Glennie will run out through the doggie door which Jake hasn't started to use yet (and I'm not encouraging him to until he is larger). Today when I opened the gate for the big guys, he ran right out with them. He didn't watch to see what I was doing and he stayed out there with them until he realized I was going inside and then he raced to get back to me. He is starting to become much more independent of me!

Jake starts school on April 3 and has his next vet appointment on April 4. I can still hear congestion in the night but it is nothing like it used to be.

Jake will be adopted soon by his foster family who have each bonded with him in their own way. His name will be John Jacob, Jumpin' 4 Joy. This is in hopes that he will be able to do agility and be eligible to jump 4 inches; and of course he will be starting earthdog practice in April and will start with obedience as soon as he gets through the preliminaries of kindergarten. He can't get an ILP until he is six months old but the paperwork is ready. Hopefully he will grow enough coat that there will be no qustion that he is a Westie and his paperwork will come through quickly so he can enter some earthdog tests this summer.

Later in the day, Jake saw himself in the fireplace and spent quite a bit of time growling at himself. He wanted to approach but was a bit afraid to. Finally he worked up enough nerve to get right up close. Then Glennie arrived and they began a game of chase. I do believe Glennie is trying to teach Jake how to use the doggie door. He would get Jake running and then run out the doggie door; when Jake didn't follow, he'd come back in and try again. So far, Jake hasn't followed him out but I can see it coming.

MARCH 28, 2006

Jake still really really likes that duck! One ear is up today and the other is going back and forth. He remains at 7 3/4#.

END OF MARCH 2006

Jake ended the month on a high note. He is about 8 pounds now and you would never know he had ever been sick. He is about 75% housebroken and is learning so quickly. He is now so anxious to run with his brother and sister, that he doesn't wait to see if I go out with them. He can't keep up with Glennie yet but he outruns Molly! His cough is entirely gone and he doesn't seem congested. We hope that his vet appointment next week will show that the congestion is gone and he can come off the antibiotics. Jake starts school on Monday and we expect him to be the star of the class! LOL When given the opportunity at a fun match the other day, he ran up and down the dog walk and thought he was really "hot stuff". He and Glennie are becoming great friends. Glennie finally realizes that Jake will make a fun playmate who is willing to run and play more than Molly does. Jake's coat is coming in fast and he is just looking great now. If we could only get those ears to stand! LOL

Thank you everyone for reading Jake's story and offering support. So many people helped him out when he was sick through prayers, good thoughts, financial donations, auction purchases, babysitting and just every kind of support he could have wanted. And the result it a little boy who has a chance to grow up into something really special.

Jake's story will continue, probably at a less than daily rate of posting!! We will connect this to our family web site, www.westiedreaming.com because Jake will be joining our family. To see more of Jake, you can go to Jake's story continues .
