WELCOME TO MY BIRTHDAY PARTY!!
Jake is no longer "Baby Jake"! He turned 1 year old today. He had a little party with his sister and brother. You can see that he really liked his cake!

Molly and Glennie share his big day!

Jake just couldn't wait for that first taste!
CHRISTMAS, 2006
THE VISIT WITH SANTA!
This photo was taken at a Westie Club Christmas party by Michelle Bogart. As gifts were exchanged, Jake decided that each one belonged to him. He even managed to steal a couple of them and run off! He is looking forward to Santa's visit on Christmas eve!

A family portrait
Everyone was groomed today. Jake is now 14 months of age and is just a bit heavier than Molly. But his weight is in his length and height rather than his body. Molly has the well-conformed stocky body while Jake remains lanky. I'm afraid he will not make the 11" cutoff for 8" agility but he jumps so well, I'm not sure it is going to matter. He went to a seminar yesterday and got very good comments on his agility style. Our struggle will be to maintain his enthusiasm but gain more "control". He is a bit of a wild child yet. He is good when we have attention but his attention span is still rather short. There is a bit of the devil in him. If he had fingers, in this shot they would be held up as "horns" behind someone's head!
Today is the start of what is predicted to be a big snow storm over the next three days. This follows a couple of weeks of extreme cold. Jake and his siblings have been outside a lot because they really like snow. Here is Jake, taking a reluctant break from play, so mom can get a photo.
GOTCHA DAY 2007

February 17 is the one year anniversary of Jake's arrival in our home. Today he is a big, strapping boy! He is actually a tiny bit heavier than Molly and taller.
In one year Jake has grown from 3.5# to 16.2#; he has earned his CGC award and has his Rally Level 1 title in APDT. (Because I want to bring him along slowly, he hasn't yet tried AKC Rally.) And he is now starting a competition agility class. I'm aiming for 2 years of age for agility; I suspect he won't be reliable off lead until then. He is training in obedience and may start out in St. Hubert's obedience this spring and AKC later. Jake does well but he is a little too bouncy and I don't want to discourage his enthusiasm. In school he is likely to retrieve everyone else's dumbbells too! Hopefully this year he will "get those rats"! And soon he will get a chance to try lure racing again. He loved it when he tried it at six months of age.
COBO HALL LURE RACING MARCH 2007

Jake spent the weekend at Cobo doing Lure Racing. He was pretty impressive. At first he kept catching the lure (the photo shows him with it in his mouth, still running!) but they figured out they had to move faster to keep him from it. Still he got pretty close sometimes. He LOVED the whole concept and could not wait his turn. He slowed down a bit the first time I put a muzzle on him (due to being in a race with other breeds) but the 2nd time it didn't bother him a bit. This boy is just made for speed. When they put in a tunnel and jump, he flew thru and over without any hesitation. I was pretty impressed by my little boy!
EASTER BUNNY JAKE
The Easter Bunny made an early visit to us but he looks a little grouchy!!!
The Easter Bunny needed an assistant. This job was just getting too big for one bunny! He went looking for help and lots of bunnys volunteered but they fought so much over the job that he decided to find a bunny lookalike. That's when he found Jake. Jake's ears are just about big enough to qualify and he is white and fluffy! Here is Jake's audition photo.....However, when E.B. meets Jake, he is going to realize that they are going to have to something about the tail!
JAKE (AND FAMILY) AT 16 MONTHS

APRIL 21, 2007

Jake spends time with foster girl, Chrissy. Jake is a funny guy. He puts every new dog through a little "greeting/test". He goes up and barks in their face to see how they will react. If they play, that is good. If they don't challenge, that's fine. He is doing well with Chrissy who tried to get out of his face when he did his test. He has only once found a dog who he couldn't get along with but hopefully, as he matures, this will become less of a process.

Some early garden photos. The green plant will soon have yellow flowers. It is huge but there is a Jake-sized bare spot in the center this year.... It got a little too sunny for this photo of the threesome but at least they look happy!.

June 7, 2007

Tried to get some photos today but no one was cooperating. This was the best of the bunch. I don't know what Miss Molly got into to stain her beard so badly but it got like this shortly after she killed a toad. That made her mouth foam and maybe it caused the staining... very frustrating when the flowers are just now starting to come out. Hope it grows out quickly. When she gets stained like this (usually in the spring when there is so much to explore outside), I call her "Klem Kadiddlehopper".
By the way, Jake got measured for agility..his first official measurement of three and he is 11.5 inches tall. This means he has to jump 12 inchs in AKC but I am sure he can do it.
This photo is taken in the earthdog garden. Behind all those plants is hidden an underground tunnel which they use to practice for earthdog and sometimes, just to play or to hide out.

I guess they NEVER grow up. Here is Jake and his big brother Glennie. Don't have a clue as to what they found in the yard that was orange!! Glennie looks properly contrite but Jake is waiting for me to turn my back so he can go out and get into it again! By the way, despite appearances, Jake is smaller than Glennie. I always marvel over the difference their internal "self-confidence" makes in their physical appearance. Glennie always photographs small and Jake photos larger than life.

Wow, what a warmup for earthdog practice tomorrow! The dogs started going crazy looking out the window and I couldn't imagine why. I could not see anything. But they couldn't calm down. Finally I spotted him just a few feet away. The amazing thing is that he knew they were there (the barking was so loud!) and kept coming. I finally had to go out with a broom to scare him away because he was trying his best to get through that fence! All THREE dogs were barking and working like crazy...even Glennie who is my "silent" guy!

Jake and the kids all wish everyone a very happy July 4th holiday! They all went to a trial yesterday and came home with ribbons...Jake got another Rally Level 1 ribbon. In the last month or so, some wires in his brain seemed to make some new connections! He was able to concentrate and pay attention better than he has in some time now. Today they stayed home and played in the yard. They will have a relaxing holiday. They plan to do some tracking and some obedience work but mostly just play and have fun.

What can say more about how these three feel about each other than this "circle of love"?
July 29, 2007

Jake is really a young adult now even though he retains some puppyness. He is now working at Agility, Rally, Obedience novice and open, Tracking and lure racing. He is getting much better at self-control and can even 'stand for exam' without puppy wiggles and kisses for the judge! Most of the time in agility, he comes when called! But he still has a ways to go before we will start competing in anything other than earthdog and APDT rally.

And here he is with his family....Glennie, Jake, Molly

Back row = Jake and Glennie; Front row = Molly, foster Mac and foster Tucker

Foster Tucker, Molly, Foster Mac, Jake and Glennie

Labor Day weekend means school is starting! Miss Molly appointed herself "Professor of the Mousing Arts" and taught the boys the finer points of finding and stalking mice. Mom was finally given the assignment of tipping the storage cabinet so they could reach the critter (who escaped by a tail by scurrying through the fence before 5 little Westies could catch him).
I guess actually catching the mouse will be a graduate course!
If Molly's tongue wasn't hanging out so far, you would see the clumps of dirt still attached to her chin!!
Under Molly's tutelage, Jake earned his first Junior Earthdog leg last weekend!

Tucker is the extra dog. He is in foster care and is probably going to be in foster care for a while. He has diabetes but he is a sweetheart of a Westie. (You can tell Jake by the size of the bunny rabbit ears)
All dressed up for their Holiday obligations!!
