OUR BACKYARD EARTHDOG TUNNELS

I got really tired of the looks of the above ground tunnels in the backyard and I suspect my neighbors did too.

The original tunnels were covered in oilcloth. I had 5 yards of dirt brought in to surround them.

Then the area was planted with plants that would tend to grow and drape over the tops of the tunnels and ground cover that can take some foot traffic.

The tops remain exposed so the tunnels can be opened and inspected, especially in the spring to be sure no critters have made it "home".

Over the winter I plan to remake the liners out of PVC "frames" covered with dark oil cloth. This will make them light weight for inspections. I think by spring the dirt will be packed down enough that I can lift the old liners out without disturbing the dirt walls too much and then set the new ones in.

The oil cloth can be removed in the corners to create openings for them to connect to one another.

Lots of new places to hide!

During a game of chase, Molly actually ducked into the tunnel and stayed in there while Glennie waited to see if she would come out again!

A quiet garden when the dogs aren't there

We have an earthdog practice area that looks good too. So this is our big experiment for the year. We hope it works out. (The dogs were a bit hesitant because the entrance is steeper than before but they are going through it okay now.)

I should have taken these photos earlier in the summer when the garden was really nice; but at least this shows how much it has grown in.
